Fallout

Even though Fallout was anti-anarcho(they were socialists), they was still connected to the scene. They hardly played live, missed several gigs, and went through some line up changes. It is almost impossible to find any information on this band, though former members being Rob Headache(drums), Rob Brainache(bass vocals, later guitar), Steve(bass) and John Eyeache(bass) have posted small comments about Fallout on other blogs and videos. There was rumor of an album that was supposed to be released on Mortarhate, but it never happened so The material was lost and never heard. One former member of the band has the album, but has yet to upload it.

Here is a quote I got from a member of Fallout:

"when SMW disbanded Charlie (the singer) went on to form Fallout-starting off as a kinda solo idea but eventually Fallout was made up of some of the members of SMW back in its fold-Rob on bass, another Rob on drums,Chalie singing and later still me on bass.I played with them at gigs in Brum/Coventry and London.I play bass on the album 'we wont be your fucking poor' and also on an unreleased Fallout album thats been sat in my loft for the last 30 years! lol. cheers."

     Fallout's first E.P. was a self release E.P. from 1981.

1982 saw the release of Fallout's second E.P. titled " Salami Tactics"

In 1983, Fallout released their very underrated "Home Killed Meat" 12"

In 1984, Fallout released their last record titled "Butchery". In 1985, two tracks were released and put into two different compilation albums. One being " We Won't Be Your Fucking Poor" and the other being "Here We Go". It is a shame, because Fallout was a very good band and very underrated. Hopefully one day more information, pictures and possibly a retrospective release will surface.

"Passing Judgement"

Mrs do-gooder, always had her act together.
She was so clever, knocked you over with a feather.
She has got it all worked out, what parents lack, why kids freak out,
and who, who are you passing judgement on today?

Mrs Social Worker, Mr Welfare Care,
what did you learn at college, that will ever help you here?
Telling real people where they've gone wrong,
you've got to make the system work to prove that you belong.

And Who, who are you passing judgement on today?

You're so understanding, I bet your hairdo's everlasting,
double decker, family wrecker, see a doctor, go one better.
You've got the keys to all the locks, like Valium and electric shocks,
and who, who are you passing judgement on today?

There's more to you than meets the eye, like the lives you judge as the years go by,
like the lives that you dismiss, "This one's violent, he's a thief".
Your way of living must be right,
I think I've Almost seen the light,
all that knowledge, all those books,
judging people by their looks,
protect him from his alter ego,
you're the expert you should know,
all that training in your head,
you must know how good lives are lead.

Who, who are you passing judgement on today?

Toxic Ephex

Alongside Oi Polloi, A.O.A., Alternative and Political Asylum, Toxik Ephex were another of the very few anarchist bands from Scotland noted to have been associated with Crass. Life began early for the original members, forming the band 'The Abductors' on the day Sid Vicious died in 1979 while they were all still schoolboys. The original line-up was Gary 'Weeeck' Dawson, on vocals, Keith Thompson on drums, Stephe 'Steppe' Dempster on bass and Fred 'Inspector Blake' Wilson on guitar. After a short while, Keith was replaced by Jimmy Sim on drums, and Trouper was added on bass. The following year in 1980, the band had developed a questionable reputation and had to change their name to Toxik Ephex, which was taken from a medical book, from Fred whom was working as a pharmacy technician at the time.

Gigging then began and soon enough, the band went into the 62 Club to record their song 'Police Brutality' on a reel to reel machine which was cut from a live show. It was sent to Crass, and released in 1982 for the Bullshit Detector 2 album. However, by 1982 the band was starting to become inactive, which led to their drummer Jimmy selling his drum set and leaving the band, being replaced by Chiz, and Trouper also being replaced by Mikey 'Gloo Pimp' Smith on bass. Afterwards, Gary left and was replaced by Dod Copland on vocals, and Fred's brother Dave Wilkinson filled in rhythm guitar until Steve Anderson took over. Unfortunately, Steve Anderson was replaced by Frank Benzie, and this became Toxik Ephex's 'classic' line-up.

With keeping the 'Do it yourself' attitude, Fred started his own label called Green Vomit Records. With support from Oi Polloi, and money raised from their gigs, Toxik Ephex entered Pier House Studios in Edinburgh to record their 'Punk as Fuck' single. the original singles were handmade and sold out very quickly, so they were repressed, but with printers this time due to popular demand. The three song titles: 'Fallout Shelter', 'Always Skint' and 'Nothing's Permissive' pretty much summed up what the band's views were of contemporary life.

In 1987, Toxik Ephex teamed up with Oi Polloi and released the split L.P. 'Mad as Fuck'. The record was recorded the exact same way the one before it was. It was featured on Fred's label and recorded in the same studio. The record gave the band yet another boost, and they soon began working on their next E.P.

1989 saw a split E.P. release by Toxik Ephex and Shrapnel on the Words of Warning label. During the same year, the band recorded their debut album 'The Adventures of Nobby Porthole the Cock of the North'. The band carried on, but the unemployment and lack of money were starting to get the best of the band. They could had signed on to big labels, but the band refused to sell out which led to their demise.

Fred left the band to play elsewhere, and Chiz followed slightly after. This is when Toxik Ephex disappeared. Fortunately, every now and then the band reappears to play random one-off gigs around their area with a constantly changing line-up, and still do to this day. 2006 saw a new 7" titled 'Civilised' release. In 2007, their retrospective double CD was released titled 'Punk as Two Fucks'.

"Fallout Shelter"

Everywhere you go,
there's a black cloud hanging low
its mushroom shaped,
but it's all in your mind.
But what are you going to do
when your nightmares come true
and you find you've got no place left to hide.

I'll play no part in the world today.
I wanna go lock myself away
from you,
and your wicked world outside.
Do you think I care what happens to you?
I wont come out whatever you do.

I'll build myself a fallout shelter and hide
from you
when your dreams come true.
I can see it through.
I'll build myself
a fallout shelter
and hide.

What's gonna happen to you,
when the warnings come through,
and you find you've got 4 minutes left to die.
You'll come crawling to me.
You'll be begging on your hands and knees
You can do what you like,
but this is what I'll say.

I'll play no part in the world today.
I wanna go lock myself away
from you,
and your wicked world outside.
Do you think I care what happens to you?
I wont come out whatever you do.

I'll build myself a fallout shelter and hide
from you
when your dreams come true.
I can see it through.
I'll build myself
a fallout shelter
and hide.

I'll play no part in the world today.
I wanna go lock myself away
from you,
and your wicked world outside.
Do you think I care what happens to you?
I wont come out whatever you do.

I'll build myself a fallout shelter and hide
from you
when your dreams come true.
I can see it through.
I'll build myself
a fallout shelter
and hide.

"Nothing's Permissive"

You want to make me go to war
because it's good for my country.
it's good for me,
I DON'T WANT TO!

Got to get up at seven o'clock
five days of the fucking week,
I DON'T WANT TO!

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them
but they wont listen.

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them
but they wont listen
to you.

Make me a killer with a gun in my hand.
Trained to kill for the good of the chance,
I DON'T WANT TO!

You want to make it all compulsory.
Youth unemployment without asking me
I DON'T WANT TO!

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them
but they wont listen.

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them
but they wont listen
to you.

Mother tells me that my dad
never had the freedom that I had
Too bad.
I want to be just how I feel,
not just some Cog in Society's wheel,
I DON'T WANT TO!

You want to make me go to war
because it's good for my country.
it's good for me,
I DON'T WANT TO!

Got to get up at seven o'clock
five days of the fucking week,
I DON'T WANT TO!

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them

Nothing's Permissive.
It's just a prison.
That's what you tell them

Hagar The Womb

Left to right:Guitarist Janet, Drummer Chris from Cold War, vocalist Ruth and second guitarist Paul who was also from Cold War.
Hagar the Womb were a female fronted, rather colorful and refreshing band, who wanted to have a little more fun than just shouting out the same gloomy political message that so many other bands were doing. After being ignored and laughed at by the men who ran the Wapping Anarchy Centre for trying to speak their minds and contributing ideas, several of the women decided to start a band so they could be taken more seriously. In London during 1980, Ruth, Karen, Amden and Nicola Corcoran all decided to become the vocalists, Janet Nassim became the guitarist and Stepth Cohen played the bass, while Andy Martin from The Apostles helped them by giving them a place to practice in and a drummer named Scarecrow.

Even though nobody in the band besides Scarecrow knew how to play anything, they were offered their first gig at the Centre, but the band claims that the people who were setting it up only did it because they didn't think they would be ready since they were to have it a week after forming.

4.4.84, Bierkeller Leeds, photo by Jenny Plaits.
Still, the band pulled it together, came up with a name that had no meaning, and played a somewhat chaotic gig supporting The Mob and Zounds featuring early versions of "Dressed to Kill" and "Puff the Magic Dragon".

Guitarist Janet Nassim.
Despite the gig being poorly played due to the lack of musical experience, the band received plenty of positive support, so they decided to continue with the project. Next, J.F.B.(Jon from Bromley) was recruited on second guitar, while Scarecrow was replaced behind the drum set by Chris 'Elephant Face' Knowles from the band Cold War.

This picture come from the Kill Your Pet Puppy blog. It may have come from the band themselves.
Several of their vocalists left soon after, leaving just Ruth and Karen. After several gigs, people began to take notice of the band, their lyrics, which were much more personal instead of always about war and bombs, and their clothes, which were more colorful and not black like what several "Crass clone" bands were doing. Instead of being anti-everything, the band were anti-labeling and tried to be wild.

Chris, their drummer from Cold War standing left to bassist Mitch Flacko. Guitarist Janet on the bottom right.
Soon enough, Crass's "Feeding of The 5000" got into their hands and gave them it's influence. The band also had connections with the Kill Your Pet Puppy collective, since one of their members was living at their house after being kicked out of her own home for dyeing her hair red. After recording their first demo, the track 'For The Ferryman' was pulled by Conflict to appear on their label Mortarhate's 'Who? What? Why? When? Where' compilation.

Bassist Steph.
However, their bassist Steph left soon after, and was replaced on bass by Mitch Flacko who came from other bands such as The Crux, The Snork Maidens and Flack. Soon enough, J.F.B. was replaced on second guitar by Paul Harding, also from Cold War, and gigs were luckily easy for the band to play, since they lived near clubs such as the 100 Club, Marquee, Fulham Greyhound and the Moonlight Club.

In 1984, Hagar The Womb released their first E.P. titled "Word of The Womb" on Conflict's Mortarhate label. It was engineered by Pete Fender from Rubella Ballet/Omega Tribe at Heart and Souls Studios, Walthamstow. The band got the opportunity to release that E.P. because they had been playing several gigs before it with Conlict. It hit the Indies chart and went up to number six with the track "Dressed to Kill" becoming the favorite, and also appearing in Sean Mcghee's "Anti-Society" compilation, but with the guitar solos heavily quieted down. The band continued by playing several more gigs to promote it.

Slightly after the release of the E.P. and recruiting a third vocalist by the name of Elaine Reubens, John Peel invited the band to come down and record a Peel session, but due to complications with their lyrical content and struggles to find a drum set, the band ended up sounding kind of rough and not how they really were. Afterwards, the band had a fallout with Mortarhate due to trust issues, and decided to go to Abstract Records to release their next E.P. in 1985 titled 'Funnery In A Nunnery'.

Unfortunately, their bassist Mitch left the band before a gig they had with The 3 Johns at Dingwalls in Camden, and was replaced by Paul 'Veg' Venables. Sometime during 1987 the band came to a halt with no explanation or dramatic end. Paul and Vedge went on to play with We Are Going To Eat You and Melt, while Mitch became a roadie for The Mekons and is now a tour manager.

2011 has become a good year for Hagar The Womb. A retrospective record has just been released titled 'A Brighter Shade Of Black' on Mississippi Records.

Six Minute War eventually evolved into the band Fallout(both bands were highly underrated and have posts in this blog about them .

Hagar the Womb has recently reformed with original members.

Janet on the right.

"Dressed To Kill"

Saturday Nights coming and I've just got to Prepare.
Have a bath and spend two hours washing my hair
'cos you know I've got to have my face just right. Right!
So all the boys will only fall for me tonight~ Tonight!

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Gotta try my best, best, best,
to stand out from there rest, rest, rest,.
To make sure that he, he, he,
will only fancy me, me, me.

In my sequinwed boob top I'll really stand out on the floor.
Make sure the boys will come crawling back begging for more.
With a flashing smile and tons and tons of cheap perfume. Perfume!
They'll soon realize I'm the best piece in the room. Room!

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Gotta try my best, best, best,
to stand out from there rest, rest, rest,.
To make sure that he, he, he,
will only fancy me, me, me.

I don't care if I trip or catch a chill
'cos in my flimsy clothes I wanna look dressed to kill.
Make myself out to be really, really, really hot stuff. Stuff!
Tease the boys make sure they never get enough. Enough!

With every single boy in the room I will flirt.
I don't care if I'm used or treated like dirt.
I don't even care if they call me a tart. Tart!
cos I know they reall meant to say sweetheart. Heart!
(Come with me!)
Come with me!

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Gotta try my best, best, best,
to stand out from there rest, rest, rest,.
To make sure that he, he, he,
will only fancy me, me, me.

Fancy me.
Fancy me.
Me!

Six Minute War

Six Minute War was a band from Hackney, London. They were a breathe of fresh air with very good, original music. They were known to share the stage with The Sinyx and Flux of Pink Indians. They were very D.I.Y. and produced three E.P.'s with the smallest budget possible by using A4 paper instead of a record sleeve. They had a slogan that read: " D.I.Y.not E.M.I.

Their first E.P. titled " 33.3 RPM" was recorded on February 1st, 1980, at theOZ Studio. It was released during April of that same year. There are two version of this. One was released on the Six Minute War label, and the other one was not and has different inserts. The band financed the record themselves with the "Pay no more than" attitude.

In 1980, a split cassette was released between Pitfall and Six Minute Warning. They also appeared in two fanzines, one being "No More Than".

After the first E.P. a second one was recorded during July of 1980. The song "Nurses" was recorded on July 12th, and the rest on July 20th. It was called "More Short Songs". It was recorded in the same studio. The line up throughout the bands life was Egg on vocals and bass, Dog on bass and vocals, Chaz on guitar and vocals and Dave on drums.

One final E.P. was released in 1981 called "Slightly Longer Songs". One of the weirdest things about this band is that they were against Crass's anarchist views.

The band had political lyrics, but they did not believe that an anarchist society would work because of man's natural want of power and always wanting more. They spoke against Crass in fanzines and in their songs. Shortly after this E.P. Six Minute War turned into Fallout. Crass once scolded Flux of Pink Indians for playing with six Minute War. Take it from these men, "Anarchy's a Farce!".

"Camera"

So you want anarchy, anarchy's your way, but who in the long run will have to pay. you like to call it freedom to do what you want, freedom to shoot a bloke if you think - wrong. Anarchy - freedom? anarchy's a farce. you don't pay for anarchy it's the working class. destroy the power of wealth and replace it with strength, power for the strong instead of the rich. social disorder, no rules to be broken, when you've got social disorder, life ain’t such a burden...

"Strontium 90"

went to Harrisburg for my holiday, Pennsylvania USA, saw a nuclear reactor like we have at home another fast breeding Chinese Syndrome. Scientists said it was fine, but on the 28th of march 1979 the cooling pump failed and it all went wrong; and three mile island became a bomb. Radioactive gasses escaped into the air, but nobody bothered, nobody cared. are you worried, do you share my fear that Harrisburg could happen here?

"Strike"

when you go on strike you hold the country to ransom, it's again - the national interest, but the boss's always hold the workers to ransom cause when you go on strike its against their business interest. So they call in the troops, army scabs are number one, call in the troops when your only weapons gone. They call in the troops, army scabs will do your jobs, they'll soon get things done for a few extra bob. maximize on profit that's all they want to do, exploit the working class and that means you. but you won't question their dominant position, you don't care about the slums that people live in. You can't see the wood for trees, everything you're told you believe Yes they've got you eating out the palms of their hands, it may be salt now, but soon it will be sand...

"Progress"

civilization, we've reached it at last, millions of people wiped out with a blast they don't care if we don't believe, they've got a place in the shelter, got the ace up their sleeve. progress must be achieved. then people of the world have been deceived. They take the gamble, death is the price, they've got a place in the shelter, they're alright, a neutron bomb, what a device, to protect us from communism and keep us free. leaves all the buildings, kills you and me, so they're able to develop a new economy...

"Labeled"

he got caught on his first attempt, second time he was innocent, but the copper was bent. If ever there was a scandal, robbery or vice, he had done it once so he must have done it twice. He was labeled deviant by the people on the street, labeled deviant by the copper on the beat. He couldn't get a job he had a bad reputation, he was labeled yob, social castration. He soon came round to their idea of him, labeled deviant, another life in the bin. So don't tell me that they are all the same-don't tell me their parents are to blame, exploitation and murder, starting at school, this system is the biggest criminal...

"Nurses"

It's written in their rules to put missiles before hospitals. Generals before doctors, soldiers before porters, mercenaries before maternity grants, bullets before heart transplants. Nerve gas before inoculation, who cares about the starving nations? Trench blood before sterile clean, tanks before kidney machines. Nuclear power is what we need, let the bloody peasants bleed, start another wages freeze, bring the country to its knees, use another media trick, forget about the old, forget about the sick. Bring back hanging, bring back the cane, let's make Britain great again. (?)

"Youth Culture"

Create a youth culture with the help of the media, classify it, put it in a box. Destroy its meaning to create another fashion, take away its feeling, take away it's action, Classify our ideas, that's how you make your money, more young ideas destroyed by capitalist economy. You create Mods and Rockers and put them to war when they don't even know what they’re fighting for. You believe your way is right, and you're prepared to fight, can't you see that's what they want you to do, shave your head and they'll classify you. So don't take part in the next fashion, say what you feel and take some action.

"Protect & Survive"

Turned on the T.V. to see a drama, all that was on was Panorama, told you how to stay alive, something about protect and survive. Worrying facts I began to hear, but the final message was pretty clear, our governments so out of touch - say shelter buildings cost too much Take two doors and nail them to the wall, cover them with earth, and get food for all, crawl inside and wait 14 days, listen to the radio and don't forget to pray.. Will this fighting ever cease, all I ever wanted was peace.

"So Sad"

Maggie are you going? Is your son? Would your daughter? Would you go to the front line, would you pull the trigger? You feed us so much shit, but we won't eat it, you treat me like a whore but I wont fight your war.

"Sell Out"

Just cause you sold out, I don't have to sell out too. Just cause you're the system I don't have to follow suit. Just cause you say punk is dead, now you've made your fortune - CBS, Small Wonder is there any difference. We want music for everyone, what is wrong with that? Because we want to change the system you try to say it's crap. Cause the system gave you money, you don't hate it any more. Well punk must be dead cause you're not bored and you're not poor. You've got a 5-Star flat in Chelsea, you've forgotten what its like. You're divorced from reality, but you don't care any more, because the systems sucked you in.

"The Weathermen"

The weathermen are coming over the rise, can you see the manic gleam in their eyes. Youth Movement One, sure is fun 1969 and it's just begun. Sirhan Sirhan and the Moscow Gang in March Greenwich Village went up with a bang. Bernadette Dohrn, loves the Viet Cong. "Dig It" – "Wild" The Weathermen's Song. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows... They went underground and couldn't be found. Up went the workshop, dig that sound. Having Wargasms 'till the wind died out. Compulsive violence is what they did shout and – You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

"Kung Fu Killers"

Build another Church build another Social Club build another slaughterhouse or another Country Pub. Fairy Liquid, kind to hands, building up the soap suds. Ariel washes whiter, but that can't hide the blood and guts, but Ariel's the best these days, but even that can't wash away the blood. They pin their hopes on whitewash, but that can't disguise the murdered. Red, White and Blue - that does the trick. Again they hide behind the flag, killing in God's name really can't be that bad. So build another place to pray, another place to run away, killing seems to be OK when it's done in God's name.

"Last Drop"

The days of the rope are coming back. One hour twitching with a face turned black, strong men weep – the keepers of the law. See a last meal all over the floor. Pierrepoint's sacred realm – at the depths of Hell. It was he who faced them last. Crying in the death cell. Their misdeeds now to be punished. Hanging by the neck, but the killing of one man will never bring another one back as the eyes bulge out of his head and the twitching fades away Another corpse hangs dead and the hypocrites pray. They pray for a world peace and they pray for a world without crime. Yet they still kill thousands in their aimless wars and get away with it every time. As guts and blood pour over the land, as banners fly and hymns are sung. The victors take justice swiftly to hand and so-called criminals are hung, but if they murder for God and Country or kill in a bank robbery they are one and the same to me. One and the same to me. Some talk of the rope's return, some people never learn, but if the rope will quench their righteous thirst I know who should be hung first.

Look Mummy Clowns

Even though the Eratics were finished, the remaining members wanted to continue. in early 1982, They recruited Dan McIntyre from The Apostles on drums and renamed themselves as Look Mummy Clowns. Now that Bondage had been replaced with a better the drummer, their sound completely changed and they ended up sounding really different from all the other bands.

Roper.
They played their first gig with Lack of Knowledge. They would continue on to record a live demo and gig with several bands including Hagar the Womb, Urban Decay, Blood and Roses and Flowers in the Dustbin.

Connections with a guy named "jumpy" that was an old Eratics fan who also liked the Clowns, gave them a chance to come out around Italy and play. While they were there, they recorded the 'Bardbuster" 7" on Toto Records, an offshoot of Jumpy's Attack label.

Guitarist Snout
Unfortunately, trouble came at their last gig at New Merlin's Cave, Islington, June 11th, 1985. Roper and Stringy had fallout over a worthless argument which led to Roper storming out of the place. The band was going to play without him, but decided not too, and split due to The Eratics history happening all over again but with Roper this time.

Stringy, Snout and Roper eventually got back together, but as a different band called Peckinpah. They have remained musically active to this day.

No lyrics. Of anyone knows any post them in the comments!

A Couple of Things.

When it comes to 'Anarcho Punk', a lot of people just seem to want to 'collect' rare tracks by these bands blindly without realizing what they were truly about. It is sad that nearly all the 'Crass' bands that were against the 'Sex Pistols' punk bands that sold out ended up getting swept under the carpet and forgotten about over time. Lots of blogs have tried to spread the music, but putting a band picture with a download link to poorly titled tracks isn't going to change the way people think. What mattered the most to 'anarcho punk' wasn't the fashion or the music. It was the content in their lyrics and getting people to think for themselves.

This blog will be dedicated in covering all the bands with as much detail as can be researched about them along with pictures and endless pages of lyrics. I want people and read them and hopefully question the things around themselves, seeing as though most of the lyrics are still relevant today, or even more than they ever were back then. Putting down the downloading link is the last thing I am worried about seeing as though lots of these songs are already out there somewhere to download. However, I do have some material that has never been uploaded before, but it will be a pain to get them into split MP3 files.

Going to be busy with a lot of things(School and my band). I will be using box to upload my files. You will need Itunes to play all of my songs(It's a free download). I can only get a certain number of downloads every month and when my limit is up the files become unavailable until the next month so you better get them fast! Some may appear untitled, but once put into Itunes, they will all be shown to be labeled correctly. I also need to get some equipment to rip some tapes and records. I will get it all sorted out eventually but will take several months to do.

Credit to most of the pictures, info and songs goes mostly to the Kill your Pet Puppy blog(many, many thanks for your contributions), Gabesuk82.blogspot.com, Heather Joyce(Toxic Shock/Metro Youth/Sanction), Revulsion, Famous Imposters, Rich Cross(Metro Youth/Sanction. I recommend you check out his website which is listed on the bottom of this page), Hagar The Womb, Sean McGee, lots of fanzines I've forgotten the names of, Roy Wallace, Sean(Anarka and Poppy), The Cravats, Lance Hahn, Terminalescape.blogspot.com Fallout, Paula Taylor, an individual known as "Whirling Pig Dervish", 433rpm.blogspot.com, Trunt(for several of the photographs), Miles "Rat Naplam", Feed your Head, Graham Burnett, Andrew Bayles(DAN), Jim Wafford, Zillah Minx, Sid, Paul Cussens, Iain Influx and Ian Glasper(a great author indeed). All those people are the ones who truly deserve to be given credit, not me. I am simply bringing all the information together in a simple, consolidated manner.

Once again, just to clarify, I take no credit in any of the pictures and most of the information on this blog.

Once you download and listen to these bands, or if you are familiar with them I would appreciate it if you comment on what you thought about them/memories,other info. Most of these songs will be remastered and far better in quality than the ones you find out there in blogs, soulseek, etc.

Civilised Society?

Civilised society? played punk music that was fused with metal, yet had brilliant lyrics. They were from Batley in West Yorkshire and started out with Dinger on vocals, Stan on drums, his brother Jerry on bass and Mick on guitar. Mick apparently 'sucked too much' and was replaced by Jerri. Afterwards, their roadie named 'Slops' took over on bass, and they got two more additional vocalists named Bev and Jowan. All of the members pointed out that early Metallica and Anthrax(the metal one) had become influences on their style, as well as Crass's ideas.

They immediately recorded their first demo titled 'You must be Joking' but Jowan apparently 'got pissed and left'. Afterwards, the band recorded their second demo called 'Who would have Thought?'. By this time, the Instigators had split, and they asked their ex-drummer Hammy to join them as their third vocalist. The band released their demo tapes with the help of Dick Lucas from the Subhumans and Simon Mooney from the Instigators.

Their first record would had been through Bluurg, but something that has not been explained yet happened between the band and the label which led them to Manic Ear Records instead. With a budget of two hundred, and forty-eight dollars, the band recorded their 'Scrap Metal' album. Some say it marked the new era for the 'Thrash' genre. It was described as 'Virtually Heavy Metal Music, played at Punk speed with meaningful lyrics. And even a touch of 'harmony' thrown in!'

After he album, Civilised Society went through a nasty fallout with another anarchist band called Conflict. According the Civilised Society?, they disagreed Conflict's idea of fighting the system which was 'Fight Fire with Fire'. The band said 'Two wrongs don't make a right' and cautioned the activists that were getting exposed to Conflict(I have nothing against either bands). Conflict countered this by calling the band 'Pacifist Headbangers' and threatened them with a reception committee at a show in London. Soon after, Dinger left the band to focus on his activist activities, but he was incarcerated for four years after a big A.L.F. conspiracy.

This didn't stop the band, and they quickly recorded and released their second album titled 'Violence Sucks!' on the same Manic Ears label. Kerrang's Paul Miller awarded the album 4.5 K!s and Bernard Doe(editor for Metal Forces) gave it a 90 out of 100. However, the band began losing hope in itself, and split in 1987, playing their final gig at a very special Christmas party on 23/12/87 in Adam and Eves in Leeds where it all began for them. Several tracks were recorded after 'Violence Sucks!' for several compilation albums that were considered to be their 'finest and most advanced work' but they were ultimately lost over time. Civilised Society? managed to release a retrospective double record release in 1990 titled 'You have been Warned' but the band was unable to find their last recordings so it only featured their two albums in one release.

"I Can be Free"

Can it really be true?
Can it truly be real?
Can they really lock me up
for the way that I feel?

Can they tell me - What to say?
Can they tell me - What to do?

Can someone please tell me.
Please tell me it's not true.

When they give me advice.
When they tell me what's right.
Does it really mean
I've got no other choice?
When they tell me to be quiet.
Not to make a lot of voice.
Are they really telling me
They've got no use for my voice?

If they tell me when to laugh
Then they tell me when to cry
Are the keeping me in practice
To be told what to buy

When they tell me - What to eat
When they tell me - What I need

Do they make me a consumer
Just to satisfy their greed?

No of course it's not true
No it's not right

If I really wanted to
I can live my own life
I can make my own rules
And ignore the fools
All the ones who tell me
What to say and do

If I open my eyes so that I can see
That if I open my mind then

I can be free!

The Apostles

The Apostles, who have probably influenced me the most out of all the bands that will be mentioned here, may carry a passionate hate for the anarchist and pacifist punk scene, want to be forgotten and deny ever being a part of it, but got involved within it during their time as a band and made such great contributions to that scene(though they questioned it to no end) that they ended up becoming associated with it whether they wanted to or not(somebody once commented on the band saying that 'Crass opened the door. The Apostles kicked it in'). The band helped setup four different anarchy centres: The Autonomy Cetre(Wapping), The Centro Iberico(Westbourne Park), L.M.C.(Camden) and the recession club(Hackney) and they also ran an information network, got homeless people connected with housing co-ops and squatter groups, gathered like minded individuals, included an abundant amount of writings and art in their releases, organized several non-musical social events, and took part in lots of direct political action. Formed in 1979 around the Islington area of London, The Apostles began life with William 'Bill' Corbett on vocals, Pete Bynghall on guitar, Julian Portinari on bass and Dan McIntyre on drums in hopes of starting something similar to Crass. It would not be until a few years later when their two most controversial and well known members Andy Martin and Dave Fanning joined. Both Andy and Dave are homosexuals(Andy also has Dyspraxia) and this played a part in destroying the bands popularity, pushing them more underground than most of the other bands because people felt that they couldn't support the Apostles due to their gay members and also their anti-anarchist pacifist punk views.

Dave on the left and Andy on the right.
The bands first singer, however, had to leave to go to University, so his older brother Andrew Bynghall who was drumming for Twelve Cubic Feet at the time told Andy that his little brother's band needed a new singer. Andy joined(was previously in the bands Black Flag/Carnage but felt too ashamed to tell the band that he was gay because he thought that they wouldn't accept him, so he didn't tell them at first), but wanted to make them a pop group like Twelve Cubic Feet, where as the other three members wanted a Crass like group. Pete, Julian and Dan had become regulars at Crass and other Crass related gigs, but Andy would never want to go with them, called Flux of Pink Indians 'Flux of Pink Idiots', and would decide instead to go to places like the Africa Centre too see such bands as The Lemon Kittens and Eyeless in Gazza. Despite their differences, The Apostles managed to play their first gig at the basement Youth Club in Covent Garden, and their second gig with the Sinyx; the first gig being where Andy met Dave Fanning(at the time he was playing bass for Innocent Bystander and Libertarian Youth) and John Soares(at the time was Libertarian Youth's guitarist). However, the band eventually came to the conclusion that they could no longer work with Andy so they 'sacked' him, picked up all their gear and left him by himself.

Andy remained very determined(I find him as a very smart, clever and funny man), so he started his own label called Scum tapes, took up guitar, drums and vocals, recruited Dave Fanning on bass, John Soars on guitar and Martin Smith on drums. The three new members were all formerly from the band Libertarian Youth, and Andy even decided to sort of get back at his old band by calling it the Apostles. This would be the lineup that came to release their cassette only albums 'The Apostles' in 1981 and 'The Second Dark Age' in 1982 on their label Scum Tapes. As homosexuals, both Andy and Dave struggled with becoming accepted within the other anarchist punk bands, and even helped with the gay liberation struggle and even setup gay co-ops.

On December 18th, 1982, The Apostles played at the Zig Zag Squat gig along with Dirt, Faction, The Epsilons(D & V), Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, Conflict, Sleeping Dogs, Soldiers of Fortune, Amebix, Omega Tribe, Null and Void, T42, The Mob, Polemic and Youth in Asia. The Apostles played between Sleeping Dogs and Amebix. It was a free all day event where each band was only allowed to play thirty minute sets. Several of the bands consider it the best gig they ever played, but Andy recalled an event recently that took place during it that made him feel complete disgust towards the anarchist pacifist punks.

While one of the bands was playing, five skinheads forced their way in and pushed Andy and some others out of the way to get to the front of the stage, and as Andy and Dave followed them, they witnesed the skinheads take down a fifteen-year-old Asian boy and they began beating him. Andy turned to the 500 strong audience, but to his surprise they formed a circle around the skinheads and watched the young boy struggle to fight back and get beat up since their idea of Crass's pacifism couldn't let them fight back. This enraged Andy, so he and Dave began to move towards the boy, but Penny Rimbaud and Andy from Crass jumped in and pulled off the two biggest skinheads while Colin Jerwood from Conflict took care of the rest until the skinheads ran away scared. When Andy Martin went to comfort the boy, he was surprised to find out that the boy had come down to the gig to see The Apostles play because John was in it, and himself an Indian, but by that time John had left, but it was the reaction from the audience and the other bands that infuriated Andy, and he lost all respect for the anarchist pacifist punks as he saw serious flaws in Crass's anarchist and pacifist ideas(Sort of like Malcom X's belief that you should be peaceful and respectful, but if you are hit you need to hit back). Other bands such as The Rondos, Six Minute War(pre-Fallout) and Ian Bone's The Living Legends had similar beliefs to Andy and spoke out against Crass's ideas(it seems that they all ended up getting ignored because of this).

Another reason why Andy became upset was because even though Andy Palmer from Crass had invited them to come down, and they worked hard to organize the event, no one gave them mention or credit for all of their hard work. The band did not care if big groups such as N.M.E, Melody Maker or Sounds pretended they did not exist, but the fact the entire punk scene ignored their contributions in political and social activities frustrated them. As another result, Andy stated that he will 'forever hate them for it'. In 1982, the band went on to record and release their first single 'Blow it Up, Burn it Down, Kick it Til it Breaks' during that same year.

Drummer Chris Low.
Soon after the Zig Zag gig, Chris Low, who was writing to Andy and had enjoyed their 'Apostles' cassette, had just left Political Asylum and decided to come down and join the band. Chris noticed that Andy looked more like a mod, and Dave like a hippy, and that they didn't even listen to any punk bands or had any interest in sounding like Crass and even disagreed with some of their ideas. Some of the ideas that the Apostles believed in were against pacifism such as armed struggle, punk as 'dead' and no longer a threat to the system, punk gigs as an excuse to bring forth change, Class War(this was before the Class War zine associated with Ian Bone and his band The Living Legends began) and the anti-Nazi groups they were in which included hunting down and attacking racist Nazis who were up to no good.

Dave Fanning on the left and Andy Martin on the right.
Chris himself was more into bands like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire which added to the unique Apostles sound(at the time nobody else sounded like them). Once Chris joined, the band recorded and released their second and third E.P.s 'Rising from the Ashes' and 'The Curse of the Creature' both during 1983 on their own SCUM tapes label.

In 1984, Chris departed and was replaced by Chris 'Widni' Witshire. Fortunately for Chris, he would go on to play drums briefly for Oi Polloi. Malcolm 'Scruff' Lewty also joined The Apostles as their second guitarist. 1984 also saw the release of their 'Smash The Spectacle' single on Mortarhate.

In 1986, their epic debut album 'Punk Obituary' was released on Moratarhate. Later that year, The Apostles released their second album titled 'The Lives and Times of The Apostles' on a different label called Children of revolution. During 1987, Windi left the band to attend University, and Scruff also quit to focus on his other band; the trash metal band Hellbastard. The two were replaced by Sam Stokes and Colin Murrel from the avant-garde performance art duo 'The Demolition Company'.

Several more cassette albums were made after this, and in 1988, their 'Hymn to Pain' L.P. was released on the label No Master's Voice. The bands life was now starting to come to an end, but not until sometime after their last studio session were they were rejoined by former Apostle co-founder Pete Bynghall. Andy felt that a last gig was not necessary(they only played twenty four gigs during the band's lifespan) , and Sean's relationship with Colin became bitter, but Andy was convinced to do it, and so did Sean and Colin even though they both ignored each other throughout the set. The Apostles played their last gig at Chats Palace, Hackney and Andy admits that the band had finally pulled together and played a good set, but their only audience consisted of Dave's friends named John Waddingham, Tim Verden and Tim's dog Leo.(an eerie gig where they were the only group that played). The Apostles split soon after around 1990 since Pete had to leave(wanted to lead a new life in America), Andy quit and the rest couldn't carry on, but Andy and Dave organized and started a new band called Academy 23 that is still active today(Dave recently left), but under the name Unit.

Sorry for reviving The Apostles for a day Andy. I know you wont approve of this and probably hate me for it now. Your writings have inspired me though(not all, some of them are ridiculous). Credit to some of the photos goes to Chris Low(burrowed from his collection) and Ian 'Pigs For Slaughter' for writing the brilliant 'Why Punks Fails' flyer.

"Oh, Death"

Look, look,
see what the lord has done.

Look, look,
see what the lord has done.
And I know I am the chosen one.

Well look, down yonder,
down that lonesome road.
Said look, down yonder,
down that lonesome road,
for death will ease my heavy load.

Look, well Lordy well look,
daylight coming to soon.
Said look, well Lordy well look,
daylight coming to soon.
and death he come creeping in my room.

Look well, Lordy well look,
see what the lord has done.

Look well, Lordy well look,
see what the lord has done.
Yes I know I am the chosen one.

"Mob Violence"

I've come up from the slime and the factory grime
where all my friends dads are serving their time,
and the working class women's faces don't shine
when they're scrapping a living on the poverty line.
And their kids don't read Janet and John,
instead they're learning how to make a petrol bomb.
The communist party wail and whine,
well I've got no time for that sickening slime.
The national fascists call their creed,
but I've got no need for that bullshit greed.
The pacifists say 'reject and refuse'.
Ha! I've got no use for that brain abuse.

Mob Violence! Mob Violence!
Fists and faces meet when we take to the street.
Mob Violence, Mob Violence!
Because we get our kicks throwing bottles and bricks.
Mob violence! Mob Violence!
Class anger explodes when we get on the roads.

No white collared John's gonna lead me on:
he wont talk so big when his Bentley's gone.
No politician will stop my mission:
He wont travel far when his legs are missing.
No Eton blue coaster's gonna screw up my rota,
especially when his head's underneath my motor.
All your pacifist preaching pisses me off,
while peace, love and dope just make me cough.
See, the only thing I know that makes me feel high
is a half brick landing in a copper's eye.
Yeah, the only thing I know that makes me feel nice
is the sight and sound of an incendiary device.

Mob Violence! Mob Violence!
Fists and faces meet when we take to the street.
Mob Violence, Mob Violence!
Because we get our kicks throwing bottles and bricks.
Mob violence! Mob Violence!
Class anger explodes when we get on the roads.

"Worker's Autonomy (Part One)"

Singing a song in the morning
as we lock the boss in the laboratory.
Taking the charge of the factory
we work autonomously.
We used to bend and slave for making
everything for your greed,
but now we lend our labor making
under the goods that you need.

Singing a song in the morning
as we lock the boss in the laboratory.
Taking the charge of the factory
we work autonomously.

Why waste your years just
working, and working, and working and working
and selling yourself for a wage?
Take back control of
working and building and living and
set an example for the age of

Singing a song in the morning
as we lock the boss in the laboratory.
Taking the charge of the factory
we work autonomously.
We used to bend and slave for making
everything for your greed,
but now we lend our labor making
under the goods that you need.

Singing a song in the morning
as we lock the boss in the laboratory.
Taking the charge of the factory
we work autonomously.

"Anarchy, Peace & Freedom"

You're smoking a joint and you're dropping acid.
You are so pointless, docile and placid:
you talk about anarchy, peace and freedom...
well, stuff your theories, we don't need 'em.

I don't believe you care at all.
You sit self satisfied and tall, so tall.
The system has you on its' death list,
and you still call yourself a pacifist.

The church of God say they will save you;
the communists want to enslave you;
the state says you'll obey policemen,
and all you say is 'anarchy and peace, man.'

How can you tell us that we are violent
when the state spends money on Cruise and Trident?
People are beaten up in racial attacks,
so how can you tell us not to fight back?

The fires of your intelligence are never lit.
Your piss poor pacifism is a turgid trance.
You're so fuckin' stoned that you're still talking shit,
so close your arse and give your mouth a chance.

Political prisoners are killed in prison cells...
Tortured animals suffer from a fate they cannot tell.
We've got poverty and oppression and a state run by police,
and all you sat is 'anarchy and peace'... aw, bollocks!

"A New World in Our Hearts"

At the turn of the twentieth century Francisco Ferrer begun
creating a free school for the benefit of everyone.
But in 1909 the catholic church in Spain
had him executed in God's name, a murderer once again.

In a village in Andalucia in 1933
Six Fingers and associates were fighting to be free;
when the Guardia Civil Fascists started to arrive,
Six Fingers and his friends in a shepherds' hut were burnt alive.

The secretary of the C.N.T., one Salvador Sequi,
as known as Sugar Baby for his youthfulness, you see.
When the catholic militia men of Archbishop Soldevilla
shot Sugar baby down and made the church a killer...

Buenaventura Durruti was a railwayman in Spain.
It hurt him oh so deeply when young Salvador was slain;
he went to the church of Soldevilla, anger in his head -
with careful aim and a trusty gun he shot the bishop dead!

"Libertarian Youth"

Your body is a gift to the nation,
the result of a man and a woman's frustration...

You're taught to believe the unbelievable.
You're taught to accept the unacceptable.

The lies you're told are painted as true.
Thought and questions will not come from you.

A school of thought is a school of the mind,
but self realization is not or your kind.
Not for your kind.

The stream you swim is the stream they set
and it is yourself that they make you forget.
They train you for work, they teach you a trade;
you're one of the many willing servants they've made.
whether factory fodder or the office elite,
you'll attack one another like the meat you eat.

But if you protest they'll lock you away,
though you only feel anger because they made you that way.
Is it surprising that you salute the nation
when you're unaware of the degradation?
You're living a crime by obeying the law -
have you never thought why and what it is for?

You'll work for the nation until you die.
Your lives are stolen, do you ever wonder why?
Your body is useless, it now lays dead -
all because you were so easily led.
did you ever possess a thought inside your head?
Open the floodgates, paint it black and red!

Use your own head!
Use your own head!
Use your own head!

It's your own life,
live it.
